This event, free and open to the public, will be held at the Riverside Church in New York City. It is centered around a commemorative reading of Dr. Martin Luther King’s historic Beyond Vietnam speech, written by Dr. Vincent Harding. It will include music, dance, and a conversation between On Being’s Krista Tippett, author Michelle Alexander, and Rev. Lucas Johnson on Harding’s prophetic legacy. Dr. Arthur Jones has been invited to conclude the program by leading the gathering in a communal singing of “We Are Building Up a New World,” the words of which Dr. Harding penned to the tune of the spiritual, “We Are Climbing Jacob’s Ladder,” and which Dr. Harding frequently used in many events over the years as he worked to invite people into a shared building of “a truly democratic America that does not yet to exist,” but “will be.”
